Wheelchair Basketball Clinic in Boston MA

We are two physical therapy graduate students at Boston University and we are hosting an adapted wheelchair basketball clinic on April 9th.
Below is a brief summary of the event. (The official flyer & informational letter are attached).

"The New England Paralyzed Veterans of America (NEPVA) and Boston University Physical Therapy program, will host a free Wheelchair Basketball Clinic at Sargent Gym in the Student Activity Center, Saturday, April 9, 2011, from 2-5pm. This clinic is open to individuals 13 years or older, who are independent with the use of a manual wheelchair, have full use of their upper limbs, and demonstrate age appropriate cognitive skills. An experienced adapted sports coach, licensed physical therapist, and 2 physical therapy graduate students will guide players in improving basketball skills through participation in various drills and games. Stretching and strengthening techniques will also be addressed."

Adapted Basketball Clinic

 

Wheelchair basketball is an adaptation of NCAA basketball that gives people

who have physical disabilities, such as SCI, amputees, and spina bifida, the chance

to engage in physical activity. This clinic is open to individuals 13 years or older,

who are independent with the use of a manual wheelchair, have full use of

their upper limbs, and demonstrate age appropriate cognitive skills.

 

An experienced adapted sports coach, a licensed physical therapist, and 2 physical therapy graduate students will guide players in improving basketball skills through participation in various drills and games. Stretching and strengthening techniques will also be addressed.

 Parking: Free parking is located to the right of the Sargent Activities Center, when

facing the building entrance. If travelling East on Storrow Drive, take the first BU exit and make an immediate right into the parking lot. In the event that the lot is full, pay parking is available at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and University Road.

Times: Please arrive promptly at 2pm to register. The clinic will begin at 2:15.

Parking: Free parking is located to the right of the Sargent Activities Center, when facing the building entrance. If you are travelling East on Storrow Drive, take the first BU exit and make an immediate right into the parking lot. In the event that the lot is full, pay parking is available at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and University Road. 

 

Refreshments:  Please pack snacks to help you get the through the day. We will be working through the afternoon and will stop for short breaks. Water will be provided. The BU food court (775 Commonwealth Avenue) will be open if additional food must be purchased.

 

Attire: Please dress in loose fitting clothing for comfortable participation in light activity. 

 

Facility: Bathrooms are located on the first floor, just outside the gym. 

 

Additional Information:

·        Please provide an appropriate contact email address when registering for the event. 

 

·        The clinic will be held rain or shine since it is indoors, however, if there is a heavy snow storm we may need to cancel or reschedule.  Please call the BU Community Service Center at (617) 353-4710 to listen for a cancellation recording. A message will be recorded ONLY if the clinic needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather.
