NEW YORK MEN LOOK FOR REDEMPTION, BSO WOMEN LOOK FOR REPEAT

Over 50 Blind Athletes Will Take Part in January’s Edition of the Mid-Atlantic Goalball Tournament - Written by Peter Quartuccio

PHILADELPHIA, PA—On January 9, teams from New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and southeastern Pennsylvania will again gather at the Overbrook School for the Blind in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and battle for first place in the Mid-Atlantic Goalball Tournament.  An all-day event sponsored by the Blind Sports Organization, the Mid-Atlantic Goalball Tournament takes place several times a year, with the previous installment taking place in November.  Both November’s tournament and this upcoming edition will feature a total of 8 teams, 5 men’s and 3 women’s, with 5 hailing from the greater Philadelphia area.  November’s event showcased some terrific play from both the Men’s and Women’s divisions, including a bona-fide classic between New York and New Jersey—the eventual champions—in the Men’s class, a game which demands the rematch that will be seen on January 9.

A tight game throughout, and one which featured remarkable performances by NY’s Lamar Brown and NJ’s Danny Gallant, the last few seconds of the match found New York leading by one goal, and looked to be the sure bet for tournament champion.  But with 10 ticks left, New York allowed a game-tying goal; the game ended in a tie, and their prospect for first place ended with it, for while each team finished with an identical record of 3 wins, 0 losses, and a tie, New Jersey bested New York by point differential.  In addition to New York’s search to settle the score against New Jersey, the tournament will also feature November’s Women’s division champions, BSO 2, who will look to continue their dominance, as they left November’s tournament without a loss.

With a great rivalry brewing between the tournament’s top two teams, and the possibility seeing even greater things from an already impressive women’s squad, the Mid-Atlantic Goalball Tournament is sure to deliver skill and drama equal to November’s installment.

The tournament will take place at Overbrook School for the Blind, 6333 Malvern Ave, Philadelphia, PA, on Saturday, January 9, from 8:00am to 5:00pm.  For more information please visit www.BlindSports.org or www.WheelchairSportsFederation.org.
