Jess Markt, who plays small forward for the New York Rollin' Knicks Wheelchair Basketball Team, traveled to Afghanistan in late October 2009 to spend a week coaching a wheelchair basketball team in the town of Maimana in the north of the country. The team, which was working with old, ill-suited equipment and which was previously entirely self taught, showed a great deal of improvement over the course of the five day clinic. The week culminated in a road game against the reigning Afghan National Champions from the neighboring city of Mazar-e-Sharif. Though the Maimana team lost the game, the players all gained a great deal of basketball knowledge from the experience, and enthusiastically invited Markt back for another round of coaching in the future. Markt is currently working with several organizations, including Wheelchair Sports Federation, to provide quality basketball wheelchairs for the team.
