More Adaptive Rowing in NY Print E-mail

Last week, July 12-15, 2010, 17 teens and young adult women with limiting neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions took part in an expanded 4-day rowing camp (run by Previn). The goal was to empower these the young women to leave behind their physical challenges to challenge themselves physically and reach new achievements – and just have fun with their friends. NY1 did a terrific spot on the last day of the program, but I’ve attached a photo that you are welcome to use if interested (I have others – just let me know.) you can see the segment here:http://www.ny1.com/content/ny1_living/health/122281/group-takes-water-therapy-to-whole-new-level/

The Initiative for Women with Disabilities Elly and Steve Hammerman Health and Wellness Center (IWD) at NYU Langone Medical Center’s Hospital for Joint Diseases (HJD) enjoys a reputation as the only comprehensive, multidisciplinary center to provide primary medical care, gynecological and wellness services for women with physical disabilities in the tri-state area.

From 10:30-1:00 last Monday-Thursday, July 12-15 these young ladies met at the Boathouse on Meadow Lake, Flushing Meadows in Corona Park, Queens to not only share fun on the lake but also learn about rowing from experts at Row NY and its high school girls rowing team.

On Monday, they started with stretching and rowing fundamentals. They then progressed over the next four days (and through one day of rain) to team rowing on a barge. The goal is to make this a mainstreaming program to enable the women to incorporate activities such as this into their daily lives. There are four young ladies already that have inquired how to pursue this and make it a regular part of their lives.

Best regards,

Craig
